A framework for evaluating forest landscape model predictions using empirical data and knowledge

چکیده
Evaluation of forest landscape model (FLM) predictions is indispensable to establish the credibility of predictions. We present a framework that evaluates shortand long-term FLM predictions at site and landscape scales. Site-scale evaluation is conducted through comparing raster cell-level predictions with inventory plot data whereas landscape-scale evaluation is conducted through comparing predictions stratified by extraneous drivers with aggregated values in inventory plots. Long-term predictions are evaluated using empirical data and knowledge. We demonstrate the applicability of the framework using LANDIS PRO FLM. We showed how inventory data were used to initialize the landscape and calibrate model parameters. Evaluation of the short-term LANDIS PRO predictions based on multiple metrics showed good overall performance at site and landscape scales. The predicted long-term stand development patterns were consistent with the established theories of stand dynamics. The predicted longterm forest composition and successional trajectories conformed well to empirical old-growth studies in the region. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Reliable predictions of how changing climate and disturbance regimes will affect forest ecosystems are crucial for effective forest management. Current fire and climate research in forest ecosystem and community ecology offers data and methods that can inform such predictions. However, research in these fields occurs at different scales, with disparate goals, methods, and context. Often results...
متن کاملDetecting and Modelling the Trend of Change in the Forest Land Use in Garasu Watershed Area Using Landscape Metrics
Detecting, predicting and quantifying the trends of landscape pattern change in the forests of Gharasu watershed area are necessary so as to assess the crises or prevent them. To this aim, the land use maps belonging to the years 1987, 2002 and 2018 were classified through the maximum likelihood method, and the forest area changes were estimated. Then, through the Geomod model and the forest ch...
متن کاملEvaluating simulated effects of succession, fire, and harvest for LANDIS PRO forest landscape model
Forest landscape models are effective tools for exploring the effects of long-term and large-scale landscape processes such as seed dispersal, fire, and timber harvest. These models have been widely used for about a decade, and although significant advances in theory and technology have been incorporated into their development, evaluating the veracity of simulated results from forest landscape ...
